What’s the book about?
An executive of the Corporate United States of America (CUSA) finds he cannot give the order to kill one-million employees in order to restore the carbon balance and prevent global environmental disaster. Escaping to the Unincorporated States as a drug worshipper, he is faced with the task of learning to forgive himself for the harm he has caused and the responsibility he has shirked.
How did you decide on the number $1,645?
If I receive one pledge at each of the five donation levels, $10, $35, $100, $500, and $1000, the total will be $1,645. That means that I could meet my goal with just five people! Alternately, if just 100 people pledge $15, added to the pledges I have I will meet my goal.
What happens if you don’t get $1,645 in pledges? What if you just get $1,500?
I’ll get nothing. Those who pledged will not be charged on their credit cards.
What will you do then?
In the event my pledge numbers are under, I will move forward to publish the book more economically. Then I’ll start over with the next book in my series.
Why don’t you send the book to a traditional publisher? (If you don’t believe in it, why should I?)
I believe in it. I think it’s great! From a cost/benefits standpoint, I believe the benefits of being my own publisher far outweigh the so-called difficulties.
In order to get the book published by a major publisher, I’d have to spend an enormous amount of time sending it out to one big player at a time, waiting for a response, and moving on when the rejection came. Alternately, I could spend an enormous amount of time trying to interest one big agent at a time, waiting for a response, and moving on when the rejection came. At the end of this long process, if I succeeded, I’d begin a long maze-like journey through the business-model of the publisher. Many people would work to shape the book into the product their publishing company can sell, which might have nothing to do with my own ideas. At the end, I’d be expected to spend my own money and time to publicize myself and the book. If I was lucky and sold a decent number of copies, I’d receive a very small percentage of sales. Of course, the publisher would own the book and could decide to pull it, or never to publish it at all.
Instead, I’ll publish the book with my money, create a product that I can sell, spend my own money and time to publish the book, and make a much larger percentage of sales. No one will be able to pull the book off the shelves except me.
